A bill of sale for horse purchase is a legal document that transfers ownership of an equine from the seller to the buyer. It serves as proof of the transaction and typically includes the horse’s description, sale price, date of transfer, warranties (or “as-is” language), and signatures of both parties.
While some private sales still happen with just a handshake, most states and all major breed registries (AQHA, USEF, USDF, APHA, etc.) strongly recommend—or outright require—a written horse ownership transfer form. The American Quarter Horse Association, for example, will not process registration transfer papers without a signed bill of sale or transfer report.

Full legal names, addresses, and phone numbers of buyer and seller. Always use the name exactly as it appears on government ID.
Include registered name, registration number (AQHA, USEF, etc.), barn name, breed, color, sex, age or foaling date, markings, microchip or brand number, and recent photos attached as Exhibit A.
State the total price in U.S. dollars and how payment is made (wire, cashier’s check, cash, payment plan). If a deposit has been paid, reference it here and attach the deposit receipt language.
Most private sales are “as-is,” meaning no warranties. If the seller is guaranteeing soundness or suitability, spell it out explicitly (rare in private sales).
Many buyers make the sale contingent on a satisfactory vet check within 7–14 days. My template includes optional language for this.

Specify exact date the horse leaves the seller’s property.
